In May 2010 community leaders throughout Perth’s Eastern Region and Perth’s North East Corridor came together to discuss how best to advocate government for the urgent construction of the Perth to Darwin Highway along its 1995 alignment.

Under the banner of the East Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) representing almost a third of greater Perth, local politicians, chambers of commerce, business associations, transport representatives and community representatives assembled at a forum to outline their direction.

A strategic report detailing key issues and future actions was produced and a committee was formed to progress the community’s expectations. A copy of the Stakeholders Forum Report can be found on the Documents page.

Background

It was recognised in 1995 during planning of the North East Corridor that the existing route (the Great Northern Highway) through the Swan Valley had to be moved. Coinciding with this it had been decided that further urbanisation of the Swan Valley tourism precinct be halted by an Act of Parliament.

The gazetted alignment of the proposed Perth to Darwin Highway starts from Reid Highway heading north along the Lord St alignment, passing west of Ellenbrook and Bullsbrook and connecting to the yet to be finalised highway alignment at Muchea. More map details can be viewed on the Documents page.
